Its job is to let nutrients in while keeping harmful substances, pathogens, and inflammatory molecules out. When it is working well, it is one of the reasons the brain stays a relatively pristine environment.

But this barrier is not impenetrable, and it can be weakened. Chronic stress, systemic inflammation, infections, a diet heavy in sugar and processed food, and environmental toxins themselves can all increase its permeability.
